Bryan Ferry - Dylanesque - Album Review

by Campbell Stevenson

Observer Music Monthly, 18th February 2007

The cool ruler subjects Dylan to a wash and brush-up

Rating: Three Stars out of Five

Roxy's nabob of cool has form with Dylan covers - his swaggering 'Hard Rain ... ' was a deserved hit in 1973. An album of the gruff being reshaped by the smooth might, however, be a tribute too far. 'All Along the Watchtower' and 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' can't quite escape the weight of previous versions (although Robin Trower's guitar is a reminder of why he used to be the next Hendrix). There's a tasteful shimmer over all the tracks and the real surprise is 'Positively 4th Street', all bile extracted, recast as a late-night confessional. Oddly, it works.
