2007: The Year Of Roxy Music
22 Jun 2006

Phil Manzanera has given further insights into the ongoing Roxy Music album project in a wide-ranging interview on the WBWC radio station in Cleveland, but it's bad news for patient fans - there's little prospect of seeing the new album before April 2007.
Speaking from London to Matt Slys and Todd Richards on the Roxy Music Marathon on 88.3FM The Sting radio show, the guitarist confirmed that an 'enormous' amount of work had been done in the studio and that the band were 'about to do a record contract'.
Manzanera also stated that in the past 15 months 'about 17 tracks' have been recorded, stating: "I'm not saying they're all good, but some of them are fantastic."
On the subject of Brian Eno's contribution to the project, Phil said "I invited Eno to come along for a couple of days. We basically just played live and did a whole lot of stuff. It was quite strange for Eno (having not played with Roxy for 33 years). Once the initial ice was broken, we got down and did an enormous amount of recording that week."
Speaking about Roxy's current method of working, Manzanera implied a more collaborative approach that before: "Our approach was bring what you've got and let's put it into the melting pot and see what we can make of it."
Confirming that the album will not be released this year, Manzanera said: "We want to make it really good. There's no point in putting it out if it's rubbish."
On the subject of the previously stated ambition of releasing a remix album to precede the Roxy album, Phil suggested the project might have an interesting twist: "We are working on some exciting remixes of a few tracks that will probably come out initially on vinyl."
Manzanera also said that 2007 would be a big year for Roxy Music saying: "We're having a big push next year, a lot of things are going to come out next year on Roxy."
Manzo mentioned books, documentaries, and also the possibility of an anthology of material.
There was one note of caution - albeit with the guitarist's tongue firmly in his cheek - when he suggested that the band might need a 'lengthy hiatus' after the release of the album, suggesting that history had shown that such are the internal dynamics of the band, that they can only work together for about five years at a time. "Time off for good behaviour" he quipped.
