| Review: Glasgow, a favoured Roxy venue of many years standing, provided an extraordinary welcome for its returning heroes. At times I thought the roof was going to come off! Not bad for the cavernous environs of the SECC. An absolutely packed house was standing from the start, with only the overly officious security staff restraining the crowd from surging forwards. This was remedied two-thirds of the way through the set, during a rousing version of 'If There Is Something' when Ferry left the stage for a while before returning to urge the crowd to come to the front. The performance itself was not error-free, the odd solo going awry, (wasn't it always this way?) but driven along by the crowd's welcome, the band responded with some fine and inspired work, particularly for this early in the tour. Things will improve. Having been in Dublin, this set didn't quite have 'the shock of the new' but at times I still found myself open-mouthed to see my heroes on a stage, playing the songs I love, still with that slight element of disbelief. I thought that the genuine warmth of the crowd was reciprocated by an appreciative band. The performance was recorded by the BBC, for broadcast on BBC Radio 2 some time in the coming weeks. |
