| Review: I'm grateful to Michael Blake
of Zurich for contributing this review. The Hallenstadion was set up as an all seater, which is not common in Switzerland. Much smaller venue than Wembley and a bit smaller than The Point in Dublin, but the sound was very good. The crowd settled in very quickly, there were a few empty seats but not many. The lights dimmed, the by now familiar intro music started. From where I was sitting (8th row left of stage) you could see the roadie get Phil's red Gibson Firebird, meaning Phil was there behind the curtain ready to go. Two minutes later the recorded music stopped, the intro to Re-make/Re-model was heard, the curtains pulled back and there they were blasting out the song as fresh as ever. Difficult to believe this song is almost 30 year old. What a great opener, the first song from the first ever Roxy Music album. The Band were on fine form running through the same numbers we'd heard at Wembley 5 days earlier. The overall sound seemed better and i was positioned better to appreciate the images being projected at the back of the stage and the whole lighting effects. Inspite of a handful of people who ran up the centre aisle where they remained until allowed closer to the stage towards the end I felt the crowd were less knowledgable than those in the UK/Eire but still no less appreciative. Even though it was only in between "Love Is The Drug" and "Do The Strand" when the crowd finally made enough noise for Bryan to comment "that's more like it". It's difficult to highlight the best songs because with such a polished performance all were just great. So I suppose it comes down to personal favourites. "Out Of The Blue" was just out of this world especially the note perfect violin solo from Lucy (I think she's a real revelation on this tour). "A Song For Europe" can only be good, it has everything and is a opportunity for Andy to shine, which he does. "In Every Dream Home A Heartache" was sensational, particularly the lighting. Phil looked like he was having fun. He and Chris seem to get it together much better now than at Dublin. The Great Paul Thompson keeps the whole thing together. He really makes a big difference to the overall sound. The more I see the final song "For Your Pleasure" the more I believe it's one of the best exits I've witnessed, just perfect. To the refrain of "ta-raa" all the band members leave one after the other. All getting their own applause from the crowd What more can you say.....just great. After Colin Good leaves the music ends, the lights come on quickly and we all move outside oblivious of the rain. Three hours later I'm finally at home in Geneva, still smiling and still not really believing what I have witnessed for the third time in 18 days. We all have waited for this for 19 years.....we could never have expected a re-union to be as good as this. |
