Review: - I 'm Grateful to Pete Campbell for this personal review:
Five years ago this show probably would have meant the world to me. I was heavily into Roxy Music then. I always held out hope that rather than "settle" on hearing the Roxy classics performed by Bryan solo, I might actually see the rest of the band live someday. These days, Roxy doesn't quite consume my life as it did in the mid-90s. Still, once I heard they were touring, I knew that I would road trip to wherever necessary to see them . Living in Nebraska, I knew I'd have to drive a good distance! Luckily Minneapolis is relatively close. I must say, once Rufus Wainwright finished (great performance), and the stage curtain displayed the words "Roxy Music" on it, I got my first chill. Here are my impressions, divided into Highlights and "Lowlights" (If they can really be called that)
Highlights:
--"Remake..." was a way-cool curtain raiser. Took me a verse or two to locate Bryan on the stage (at his rear-stage keyboard)! "CPL593H!!!" --"Ladytron" Probably my all-time favorite Roxy song. Phil's solo was hellish.
--"My Only Love" A surprise. Chris Spedding had a very tasteful, effective solo here.
--"Out of the Blue" I don't particularly care for this tune normally, but Lucy's violin solo outdid Eddie Jobson's original. The crowd went crazy for the first time this night.
--"In Every Dream Home..." Of course it was awesome.
--"Tara" Extended duet between Andy and Lucy. Very nicely done.
--"For Your Pleasure" At first it seemed an odd one to end with, but those trippy sounds really lent themselves well to each player's exit.
--Paul Thompson's drumming. Absolutely jaw-dropping. Especially on "Ladytron".
--Observing Lucy and Julia on percussion, I thought "Yep, Bryan had a hand in choosing them, I'm sure." And they played as superbly as they looked.
"Lowlights":
--I could hardly hear Andy's wild solo after "Ladytron's" first verse (one of my all-time fave Roxy moments) due to the overpowering sound mix.
--The crowd was pretty subdued around my seat, which was far back anyway.
--No "More than This" or "Virginia Plain"!?!?!?!
--"Both Ends Burning" was "un-discoed". Kinda clunky-sounding.
--I wish Phil took the lead more. As it was he was almost too-diplomatic in sharing guitar duties with Chris.
--The visual effects equipment obstructed the view on stage a few times. Most notably it blocked Bryan as he did the fabulous whistling during "Jealous Guy."
Still, it was regal. A great show from a band who got me through my mid-20s. I am very glad I held off going to see Bryan Ferry solo, and I hope the guys find a way to make this reunion a bit more permanent.
