| Review: - I'm grateful to Marion Martin for this personal
review. For those of us who lived in England in those early heady years of Roxy Music and were captivated from the very start, then found ourselves on the distant shores of Australia, far away from the action, the announcement of a world tour by Roxy Music this year was really exciting news. Adelaide tends to be a rather quiet city but there was plenty of excitement and rocking down at the Entertainment Centre on Friday evening. The arrival of Roxy Music has been a much anticipated event since the announcement of their Australian tour dates. As the curtain was swept back across the stage to the strains of Re-make /Re-model and the band launched into it with great verve the years simply melted away and the rush of excitement was palpable. Here they were again, Bryan at the piano, not taking centre stage but just one of the band, Andy in full flight with his sax.(and a great purple suit!) Phil looking smooth in off-white and making that guitar sing,Paul very audible if barely visible from my second-front-row seat. The rest of the support musicians made fantastic contributions all night, but these were the four I'd come to see and hear again after 25 years. Bryan took centre stage for Street Life, still looking unbelievably youthful, cool and sexy in black leather and in wonderful voice all night. (What's his secret??) It's hard to pick out highlights from such a memorable concert. Their Jealous Guy continues to be the definitive version of that song for me. But the greatest thrill was to hear a lot of the early songs again - Ladytron, In Every Dream Home... and the sophisticated Song for Europe. Both Ends Burning finally brought some of the audience to their feet and dancing in front of the stage - and how could you stay in your seat for Editions of You and Virginia Plain?? Bryan was a joy throughout, confidently teasing and joking with the audience , not taking himself too seriously but never once failing to produce the magic and the moves we've come to expect from him. Finally the dancing girls came on for Do the Strand to bring the show to a climax, then the subdued atmosphere of For Your Pleasure as one by one each member of the band came forward to be acknowledged by the audience and quietly left the stage. Then it was all over, Roxy Music had existed again for a little while, had helped to recapture younger, more exciting times and now had left us with just our memories. A real feeling of loss but we could not have expected, or been given, More than This. |
